Cosmetic Dentistry Questions: What Can I Expect After the All-on-4® Procedure?

All-on-4 San Antonio, TX

When considering All-on-4® as a tooth replacement option, patients can visit either a general or cosmetic dentist. Both are qualified dental professionals who can see the procedure from start to finish. Once finished, many patients want to know what they can expect from the entire process.

All-on-4® procedure

Outlined below is an overview of an All-on-4® procedure. This information can be helpful for those who are considering undergoing tooth replacement.

What is All-on-4®?

All-on-4® refers to a tooth replacement option that involves the use of two different oral prosthetics. Four dental implants are placed in either the top or bottom arch of the jaw. They are evenly spaced so they can fully support the denture appliance, which is the second part of the All-on-4®.

The dental implants that make up All-on-4® are made of titanium, which is a biodegradable material that the body rarely rejects. The denture pieces secured by the implants are typically made of plastic and nylon, while the artificial teeth attached are made of porcelain.

When undergoing All-on-4®, patients should expect to commit a great deal of time. Once the dental implants are placed, the patient must undergo a process of osseointegration, in which the implant pieces fuse with the bone. Once fused, the dentist can attach a custom-made denture piece, which attaches through small metal pieces called abutments.

Expectations

Patients should expect to undergo a lengthy recovery time after the All-on-4® is complete. Because dental implant placement is involved, patients have to undergo osseointegration, which can take a few months. Even after osseointegration, patients have to wait for their custom-created denture piece to be made, which can take a few weeks. After dentures are created and placed in the patient's mouth, adjustment begins, which is where the patient gets used to life with their implant-supported dentures.

Results from the procedure

Cosmetic dentists recommend All-on-4® for patients who want to improve the way their smile looks. General dentists recommend it for patients who want to improve their function, which typically includes eating and speaking. However, both cosmetic and general dentists can ensure form and function when administering All-on-4® to patients.

Once the process is complete, most patients can expect a fully-functioning smile that looks comparable to natural teeth. However, there will be an adjustment period that may take some time. Because All-on-4® involves dentures, patients will have to get used to eating, smiling and speaking while wearing them. While this can create some anxiety, patients should know that the dentures are secured in place by dental implants, which cannot be said for traditional dentures, which tend to slide around.

Undergoing an All-on-4® procedure is a great idea for those looking to replace an entire arch of missing teeth.
