Full Mouth Bridge: What Patients Need To Know

Dental Hygienist Cleaning Dental Patient's Mouth

A full mouth bridge is used to replace missing teeth. Its installation is a non-surgical process that only requires the use of local anesthesia. This term “bridge” was derived from the function of the device since the artificial teeth on the devices bridges the gap between teeth.

The artificial teeth are anchored down in place by dental crowns that are placed on the two teeth closest to the gap on both sides. Crowns can be made from various materials like porcelain, ceramics, gold, and silver.

Here are some of the main features of full mouth bridges:

1. The process is non-surgical

Getting a full mouth bridge is a non-surgical process. Other teeth replacement options like dental implants require surgery and take a more extended period to recover from. This time-saving option makes bridges an ideal choice for patients with complications who may not be eligible for dental implants. For example, patients who are interested in dental implants need to have sufficient jawbone tissue density to support the device. That is not the case when it comes to bridges.

2. Permanent solution

Nothing makes a person more self-conscious than a set of teeth that may fall out when speaking or eating. When bridges are installed, the artificial teeth are fixed permanently and can only be removed by a dentist. This makes the bridge more comfortable to wear.

3. Durability

A dental bridge may last for fifteen years or more when properly maintained. Therefore, patients need to make oral hygiene a priority and head to the dentist’s clinic twice a year for checkups. Patients who have bridges should brush their teeth at least twice a day, floss daily with a water flosser, and use an antibacterial mouthwash to keep their mouths fresh.

4. It helps to maintain teeth alignment

If the bridging process is done correctly, it helps to keep the remaining natural teeth from moving towards the gap. This can lead to a host of alignment issues when missing teeth are not replaced in a timely fashion.

5. Restores the function of missing teeth

Teeth have significant roles that they play. These roles range from chewing to speaking correctly. Once a tooth is lost, some or even all of these functions may be impaired. Once bridges are installed, the functions of all missing teeth are restored as well.

A dental bridge is a permanent solution that can be beneficial to patients who have been deemed unfit for other prosthetics such as dental implants. A bridge can provide full restoration of all the missing teeth and improve their aesthetics as well. It is also a cheaper alternative to implants while being a more comfortable option than dentures.

A bridge is an excellent solution for those who want something more than dentures, but are not ready to commit to implants yet.
