Benefits of Implant Overdentures Over Other Alternatives

Implant overdentures are increasingly popular when it comes to replacing all your natural teeth. This hybrid dental prosthetic combines many benefits of implants with the affordability of dentures.

Implants are widely recognized as the best way to replace missing teeth. This is due to the many benefits that are often associated with these dental prosthetics. Most importantly is the fact these devices mimic the natural function of a person’s real tooth roots, which ensures the patient’s jawbone remains adequately stimulated even when the natural teeth are gone.

The one thing that leaves some people reluctant about getting implants are the high prices associated with their installation. A single implant can sometimes cost as much as it takes to get a complete set of dentures. It is this price difference that sometimes leaves people leaning toward the cheaper alternative, despite the many advantages implants have over dentures.

Now, it is possible to combine both devices.

What are implant overdentures?

These dental prosthetics are a more comfortable and stable option over traditional dentures. It is also a more inexpensive alternative than getting an entire mouth restored with implants. With these prosthetics, patients no longer have to worry about their dentures constantly shifting in their mouths or it falling out when interacting with strangers.

Implant overdentures are a lifesaver for those looking to replace most of their natural teeth and who cannot afford to get a mouthful of implants. These prosthetics are also a great option for patients who do not have adequate bone tissue for a full set of implants.

How it works

During the installation of full mouth implants, the dentist will begin with an evaluation of the patient’s mouth. This is done to ensure the patient has enough healthy bone tissue for the procedure and to detect any issues that might compromise their installation.

The patient is then given an anesthetic before the dentist begins cutting through the gums to get to the jawbone underneath. A metal screw or rod, known as an implant, is then surgically inserted into the patient’s jawbone. This implant is often made out of titanium, but other metals like zirconium are sometimes used as well. The implant is then given three to six months to fuse securely with the patient’s jawbone via a process known as osseointegration. This creates a stable foundation that the overdentures are attached to. The implants also ensure the patient’s jawbone remains properly stimulated.

Finally, a set of dentures is fastened to the implants, instantly restoring the look and function of the wearer’s teeth.

Benefits of implant-supported dentures

Implants-supported dentures offer several benefits over traditional dentures and implants. These include:

  • Implant-supported dentures are more affordable than replacing teeth with implants
  • Implant-supported dentures are more comfortable than traditional dentures
  • Implants over dentures do not require specialized cleaning; simply cleaning them just like one would clean natural teeth is enough
  • Implant-supported dentures help prevent bone tissue loss
